Working online can be beneficial, and technology can keep teams in touch, but in-person meetings still matter and can boost the team's efficiency.

4 benefits of meeting face-to-face

Better communication

Communication involves not only listening to your colleague's words, but also observing their body language and comprehending non-verbal signals. When you share a physical space with your colleagues, you can notice facial expressions and movements that are invisible on your computer screen. You can sense your teammates' emotions and adjust your reactions accordingly.

One benefit of face-to-face meetings is that they can prevent misunderstandings. For example, they can clarify technical issues or allow people to interrupt and ask questions more easily.

Limit technology issues

Even today, issues still arise when it comes to technology. It’s rare that meetings happen without any camera and audio difficulties, or the internet connection dropping. Technology issues can halt the flow of a meeting, and what’s been said and heard. Whereas face-to-face meetings limit this problem, ensuring that no one misses out on important information.

Build trust and develop relationships

Forming strong relationships and nurturing them over time is key to the success of any team. The best way to do this is to meet face-to-face. Being in the same room as your colleagues gives you the opportunity to have more meaningful conversations, instead of small talk online, so you can learn more about them as a teammate and a person.

Face-to-face meetings are particularly helpful if you have new starters in your team or a new client that you want to get to know better.

Sharing creative ideas

Working remotely also impacts the creativity of a team. Naturally, you’ll experience fewer connections, so it can be difficult to bounce ideas off each other. Meeting together in person increases the likelihood of interactions and can therefore improve the collaboration process.

And it doesn’t just have to be when you’re sat at your desk, some of the best ideas are shared when chatting on a brew break, or at lunch, or even at those well-deserved after work drinks.
